Conde Nast’s newest addition to the App Store, Golf Digest, is one of the latter.
The app [iTunes link] is now available as a free download in the App Store. Issues are available as in-app purchases for $4.99 apiece. Currently, only the 2011 Hot List Special Issue is available — but before you get too excited about downloading it, note that the app is more than 400 MB. (In other words, it’s going to take a while to download, and carve out a significant chunk of your iPad’s storage space.)
Now, I’m not particularly interested in golf, but the app’s snappish layout and interactive features kept me engaged through at least the first 40 featured golf clubs (there are 94 in all). Users can rotate four of these clubs for a 360-view, and listen as several clubs make contact with the ball. Video interviews and interactive quizzes are embedded throughout. There’s also video tutorials from famed golf instructors like Butch Harmon, which appear to be relevant to someone who, you know, might one day play the game… once.
Text is light, since this is an issue dedicated to golf clubs and their specs. Ads are exceedingly well-placed alongside the rest of the content; in fact, I wasn’t able to tell I was looking at a Nike ad until I clicked to play the video, it replicated the magazine’s digital format so neatly.
We expect regular Golf Digest readers will be pleased with the issue and, who knows, maybe some of you iPad magazine fanatics might find your way into a new hobby. Check out our gallery for...
