Cloud Storage Firm Gluster Joins Open Source Community OpenStack
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Cloud storage provider Gluster (www.gluster.com) announced on Tuesday it has joined the OpenStack (www.openstack.com) community.
It is Gluster’s intention to develop enhancements to OpenStack Storage offerings that give users redundancy, unlimited scale and high availability.
Gluster intends to announce its first code contribution enhancement at the OpenStack Developer Conference on April 26th 2011 in Santa Clara, California.
Launched by Rackspace Hosting (www.rackspace.com) and NASA in July 2010, OpenStack is an open-source cloud platform designed to reinforce the emergence of technology standards and cloud interoperability.
Led by Rackspace, the community also recently launched a new division, Cloud Builders, to provide service and support to businesses deploying clouds on the OpenStack platform.
Projects such as this are supported by the global software community, which works together so that any organization can create and offer cloud computing services running on standard hardware.
Gluster says it will expand its contributions beyond its initial OpenStack endeavors as it works towards delivering virtual appliances that complement the OpenStack framework and deliver scale-out storage for the cloud.
Last month, Cluster introduced the first scale-out storage virtual appliances for VMware and Amazon Web Services.
The virtual appliances for Amazon Web Services allows users to create highly scalable shared storage and the only high availability storage on Amazon Elastic Block Storage. The virtual appliances for VMware deploy in both cloud and on-premise storage.
"Gluster remains focused on giving customers high-performance, highly scalable, and highly available storage delivered with the flexibility and favorable economics of the cloud," says Anand Babu Periasamy, Gluster founder and CTO. "Joining the OpenStack community will help us further that mission. OpenStack shares a common vision of delivering open source technology and supporting cloud standards so companies can take full advantage of the benefits of cloud computing."
