Internet privacy for dummies
Our lives revolve around the net which helps us find information on just about anything under the sun. Many even find (or lose) love online. Our social lives have become “net based”. I used to consider myself an introvert. But thanks to Facebook and Twitter, I now make friends without wasting coffee shop minutes (and coffee money) to meet up.
But online life has its trade offs, Privacy. Type your name on Google’s search bar and you’ll find information about you from your social network profiles, group affiliations, or write ups (by or about you). If you’re a little popular (or notorious) than the average guy, forum threads say what people think about you.
Being a victim of electronic rumor (cached as search engine entry) is not the worst that could happen to you. Con men lurk in sites to victimize onliners via identity theft, phishing, hacking, or piracy (if you indiscriminately upload personal masterpieces).
UP Professor, computer law expert and Facebook friend Attorney JJ Disini advises an online newbie to first “know thy internet” before typing away.
One is not really anonymous online. There are ways to harvest information about you or your activities, without your knowledge or consent.
Cookies, (inedible) are information your browser saves on your PC from the site you accessed. These could help build up a profile of your buying habits or interests, and tailor advertising based on them. Delete cookies before you log off.
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a set of rules browsers use to retrieve sites you ask for. But it also tracks your surfing activities, your e-mail address or the last page you viewed. Delete history.
Browsers, such as Netscape, Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer may contain security bugs that hackers can use to access personal information. Netscape and Microsoft provide downloadable fixes from their sites.
Freeware or Shareware are available for download on the Internet, but keep track of information about them and only use those with good reputation.
Search Engines are software tools that allow you to search for information or people. Some engines allow the search of news groups for posts associated with your e-mail address. Be careful.
Electronic Commerce. Credit card information is transmitted over the net when you shop online. Make sure your browser has Secure Socket Layer (SSL) which encrypts your credit card details.
Electronic Mail (E-Mail), are like locators that track your location in cyberspace. Stanley.Palisada@yahoo.com.ph tells my name, the internet service provider I’m using and the country I’m from. If you can, construct an email address using a pseudonym, e.g. cyclone@yahoo.com.
Spam. Those who have shopped, published an email address, or joined news groups online can get spam or junk mail. Some ISPs sell email addresses to spammers.
Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Many of those who chat use fake names to keep their identity. It is unsafe to divulge personal information to strangers.
We have to remember that the internet is international and largely unregulated. We have very little control over what we put out, once it’s out there.

SM North Edsa IMAX: 4 Tips in creating a blog post that people will notice
For example, did you know that the IMAX theater in SM North is now open and they're playing a version of Harry Potter -every 3 hours? Personally we're disappointed because we want to watch the 45 minute short film. "Potter" doesn't deserve this much attention anymore this week. G-Force the movie must replace it! Give us G-Force the movie now!
Both SM Mall of Asia and SM North Avenue are playing Harry Potter -it's sad. Only two IMAX theatres in the country and they're playing the same Half-Blood Prince movies in the same week! Huhuhu.
2. And if ever you have to attach an image, did you name your image after the topic - like the one above - taken from the IMAX local site.
3. And after mentioning the news, did you mention a related item -like the fact that most cebuanos know that --there's a 4D Cinema in the heart of Cebu at the Crown Regency Hotel at Fuente Osmena. Here's what it looks like in the light: (photo from this site - read a family's experience there). The only 4D theater in Manila is in the boondocks at Sta Rosa, Laguna - inside Enchanted Kingdom.
Tip: To watch the 4d Cinema at Enchanted Kingdom cheaper - get the Carousel Special admission fee for P 150 (Free admission to the park grounds and unlimited access to the Grand Carousel, Bumbling Boulders, and Boulderville Express) and head straight to the 4D Discovery Theatre/Theater for an extra P 100 (or P60 for day pass holders). So for a 4D experience in Luzon, you'd need to pay the fare to Sta Rosa, Laguna plus P 250. (Now Showing: Journey to the Center of the Earth: the 4d Adventure, photo from EK's main site).
Cebuanos get a cheaper 4D Cinema experience for P 150 for TWO people (depends on the promo).
4. If ever you get someone's pictures, make sure you link back to them, tell everyone that the photo is from them and encourage people to visit that person's blog. Yes tell people to visit someone else's blog, that's what I said.
5. Did you also notice how many times I repeated the topics? SM North Edsa IMAX, Harry Potter, Theater, Theatre (british spelling), Enchanted Kingdom, 4D-and G-Force?
6. Your title should have the name of the topic, henceforth "SM North Edsa IMAX"
7. Always if you can - give free advise like the TIP above - on how to get into the Enchanted Kingdom 4D Discovery Theater in the cheapest way possible. How did I know? Well it helps if you can SEARCH (google) or you've done it before. And you think all those money saving tips will get no-where!
8. Now go improve your blog!

Author, E. Lynn Harris (Michigan Author) Passes Away at 53
http://www.arktimes.com/blogs/arkansasblog/2009/07/e_lynn_harris_report.aspx E. Lynn Harris, the best-selling Arkansas author known for contemporary stories about African-Americans, has suffered a serious health setback. His personal assistant confirmed an unspecified health event, but said she was awaiting word from a hotel where Harris was staying on a book tour before providing further information. UPDATE: Arkansas Sports 360 reports that Harris has died at age 54 during a West Coast book tour. The item does not cite a source, but Harris was close to the UA Athletic Department and had worked as coach and sponsor of the cheerleaders. Word of the health event began making the rounds on Twitter earlier in the morning. Born in Michigan, Harris grew up in Little Rock. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he was the school's first black cheerleader. He continued to be a diehard Razorback fan. He has taught adjunct courses in the English department, most recently last fall. read more at: http://www.arktimes.com/blogs/arkansasblog/2009/07/e_lynn_harris_report.aspx Sylvia Hubbard |
