Dear Iphone 3g, You're Dead - Nokia 5800 Xpress Music: 12 Marketing Insights

Marketing Insights on what Nokia did correct with their "Tube" 5800 XpressMusic Phone vs What Apple Did On Their IPHONE 3G.

1. It's designed to sell cheaper (400 EUR/26,000 Philippine Pesos PREPAID). Unlike the Apple Iphone 3G with it's deceptive marketing of "low price" with a high priced plan- when the world is dominated by PREPAID - nobody pays attention to a price that's quoted with a plan-that maybe true for the USA - but not the rest of us. In the Philippines alone, 80% or more of people do not have plans.

2. It's designed for how phones are really used by most people - with one hand only. Yes you can argue that people do use the phone when they drive, but please - not 70% of phone users DRIVE. Most of them are commuters - hence - it's smart to expect a single hand operated keypad on a phone - specially since it's been how people are using it anyway. Personally, I text using TWO HANDS -but not on a QWERTY Keyboard. I think Qwerty keyboards are designed to win over the Blackberry *US crowd as well as the corporate market.

3. In a brilliant example of "listening to what consumers say" - they have licked the "I can't feel what I type" problem of touchscreens by making the screen slightly vibrate to confirm that you typed something.

4. Qwerty lovers will still love the phone because it does have a Virtual QWERTY keyboard.

5. Another "Listening to consumers" move: Integrating Flash in the web browser!  How can Apple ignore Flash when it's been there from the start? Of course we'd forgive Microsoft if their soon to be announced Zune Phone uses Silverlight instead of Flash-but Apple doesn't have an alternative.  Well, from a commonsense point of view here it is: Nokia's sites DO HAVE FLASH, so it makes sense that their phones can render it. Apple's sites are plain HTML.

6. Nokia has been doing Video since the beginning of their Megapixel Camera phones (come to think of it, since their VGA camera days) so the inclusion of a DVD Quality Video Recording plus editing is already standard for their older phones (even the N70 has video editing care of MUVEE). However, inclusion of WMV video is a nice touch - but I do wonder - where can I get videos of that format these days? Not in torrents!

7. Instead of imitating the IPHONE main screen like what LG and Samsung has done, Nokia decided to INNOVATE some more and added a Social Network kind of thing -by displaying the 4 top/favorite contacts and their messages - on the main screen. This alone is good since it saves digging into the menus to review messages.

8. Not deviating from what it has done before, the 8GB is c/o a MicroSD card w/c can be upgraded to a 16GB card. Nokia isn't asking you for another 100 USD for more memory, it's up to you! Apple has been asking people to pay top dollar for cheap memory on identical machines.  Wake up apple, people know that memory cards are cheap now. They buy them for their digital cameras.

9. This is still a TOUCHSCREEN -not a multi touch but Nokia has nicely included TWO styluses PLUS another innovative but simple thing - a PICK-LIKE Plectrum -that's connected to the included WRIST STRAP. But of course you can still use your fingers.  What it does have that the Iphone doesn't have but the Newton tried to have-FULL SCREEN Handwriting recognition! This opens it up quickly to the immense chinese/character alphabet market.

10. Speaking of what's included - I've not seen a more complete line up of extras included in mobile phones of this price:  There's also a CARRYING CASE, two Cables (video out, connectivity) plus a STAND w/c you can use when you're watching the 5800's videos. Funny the IPHONE doesn't come with one but Apple expects you to FIND A WAY to prop it up somewhere so it won't fall. Just a piece of plastic can go a long way to usability.  Adding all these little things do add up to the experience, specially once the now popular UNBOXING photos start showing up.

11. The 5800 has loud stereo speakers. This was begun before by Motorola but Nokia doesn't stop there. Starting with this model, buyers from some 10 countries as of the moment (Singapore is in, Philippines not yet) --will get UNLIMITED MUSIC for ONE YEAR as part of the "COMES WITH MUSIC" platform. This alone will DRIVE people away from "design" offerings like the Iphone and get the Xpress Music.  Of course the Zune has something like this but try to remember -the ZUNE music player is USA only - even now it's in it's 2nd generation. What is Microsoft thinking? We don't know.

12. The camera again has that Carl Zeiss optics and has autofocus plus dual LED Flash.  Most consumers have NOO IDEA what a CZ optic is. But it sounds cool. And that's enough. Old Nokia Camphone users will welcome DUAL LEDS because they know that single led flashes are terrible when you need a flash - it's still dark. Autofocus is much welcome too.

13. I don't have to mention that yes, you can copy and paste and forward messages using a NOKIA. With the IPHONE ? You retype it!
14. And of course MMS has long been a staple in the GSM world, of course Nokia has it. The Iphone doesn't.

All in all, the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is a very strong phone, priced correctly and loaded with so many goodies and extras that the majority of people looking for a phone replacement (who isn't?) will consider it strongly. Right now, those who can purchase the Iphone have done so - but they're a small group. The majority of the people will be getting this new Nokia offering -specially once they open a NOKIA MUSIC STORE in the PHILIPPINES! (Hello, the land of 3 phones per person??).

Windows PCs Can will soon do Mac/IPhone-Like 2finger scrolls / Pinch and Rotate

The following is a press release from the website of Synaptics. From the
text, I'm guessing that as long as you're using an updated driver of the
synaptics touchpad - which is like in MOST Windows machines --then you
can try rotating graphics using 2 fingers, use two finger drags to page
up and page down (like a mac). However, this press release is SEVERELY
LACKING in details - when will it be available? What Machines? What
Programs will it work with?

C'mon Synaptics, you can do better than this:

Synaptics TouchPads Enabled With ChiralRotate(tm) and Two-Finger Flick
Make Notebooks and Peripheral Keyboards More Intuitive and Easier to Use

TOKYO, Japan -Sept. 30, 2008 - Synaptics Inc. (NASDAQ: SYNA), a leading
developer of human interface solutions for mobile computing,
communications and entertainment devices, today announced the
availability of two new advanced gestures- ChiralRotate and Two-Finger
Flick. These gestures join the company's expanding portfolio of gesture
recognition capabilities for Synaptics TouchPads used in popular
notebooks and peripheral keyboards.

* ChiralRotate lets users move one finger in a circular motion to
rotate images and graphics within applications, quickly and easily.

* Two-Finger Flick enables users, depending on the application,
to either use two fingers to flick horizontally to navigate
back-and-forth through images, documents and objects, or to flick
vertically to minimize and maximize an application.

Consistent with previous Synaptics gestures (ChiralMotion(tm), Pinch and
Momentum) announced earlier this year, ChiralRotate and Two-Finger Flick
are compatible with hundreds of Microsoft Windows applications and offer
tremendous value and productivity to any notebook or peripheral keyboard
that integrates Synaptics' industry-leading TouchPad(tm) touch-sensitive
interfaces. The ChiralMotion gesture has gone through multiple usability
tests, which have consistently demonstrated that continuous circular
movement of the finger on the TouchPad is the most desirable, natural
gesture for users to perform.

"The addition of ChiralRotate and Two-Finger Flick are the most recent
examples of Synaptics' ongoing commitment to driving innovation and
improved usability to all types of PC applications," said Mark Vena,
vice president of Synaptics' PC Business Unit. "Consumer and business
users alike are always looking for ways to do things faster and more
intuitively on their notebook systems and PC peripherals, and these new
Synaptics gestures are aimed at delivering just that."

Working with photos and graphics becomes much more efficient when using
a TouchPad enhanced with ChiralRotate or Two-Finger Flick. Users can
review images quickly with Two-Finger Flick and rotate them within
popular Windows applications with ChiralRotate, all without taking their
fingers off the TouchPad. These gestures join other gesture options,
such as Synaptics ChiralMotion(tm) technology - an advanced gesture that
provides an innovative alternative to conventional scrolling. As an
added convenience, all Synaptics TouchPad settings, including gesture
functionality, can be turned on or off with the highly intuitive
Synaptics Control Panel that is incorporated into most OEM notebook
systems.

Availability: These new enhanced gesture options are available now on
Synaptics TouchPads for PC notebook and keyboard devices. For more
information on Synaptics' ChiralRotate and Two-Finger Flick, visit
www.synaptics.com/technology/chiral.cfm.

Marketing Insights on Microsoft's Credit Card Style Rewards for using Their LiveSearch and IE

New. Just announced today, if you use Microsoft's Live Search
(http://www.live.com) - they'll give you free air miles rewards. Nope
this is not a hoax, but my marketing analysis of this offering.

Visit http://www.getsearchperks.com and get started earning "perks" - up
to a max of 25 perks a day -when you use Microsoft's Live Search.

Look at all of the prizes at
http://www.getsearchperks.com/Prizes.aspx?campaignid=perks
Aside from Airline Miles - most of them are HOHUM. So let's see which
airlines we can use:

"Redeem your tickets for airline miles with airlines such as Alaska,
American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, Midwest, and US Airways!

American Airlines reserves the right to change the AAdvantage program at
any time without notice. American Airlines is not responsible for
products or services offered by other participating companies. For
complete details about the AAdvantage program, visit
www.aa.com/aadvantage. American Airlines and AAdvantage are registered
trademarks of American Airlines, Inc."
-end of quote-

How long will it take to earn these?
This means you'll need 4 days to gain 100 perks and 40days (more than a
month) to earn 1000 perks - w/c I'm told will earn you some Airline
Miles. Not bad for using search - and very Jay Abraham-like of Microsoft
to offer something from the card business into search. I wonder if
Google (the leader) will do something in return?

Anyway look at the prizes you can get plus # days you have to use live
search to earn them.

An XBOX controller for 5500 tickets (use MS Live Search for 200 days)
A cookbook(!) for 3400 tickets (136 days)
1000 Airline Miles for 1800 tickets (72 days or 2+ months)
5 Music downloads for 525 tickets (use it for 21 days)
Tshirts for 1100 tickets (use it for 44 days)
Signing up will get you 500 bonus tickets.

So if you signup now and get 500 tickets, you only need to use
livesearch for 52 more days (almost 2 months) to get a 1000miles. Tell
me in the comments, is that bad?

Let's say you want to go from PHX to NY

Let's say you want to travel from Phoenix, AZ to New York, so you
already have 1000 miles after 2 months of signing up. You'll need 1500
more miles for a one way trip - so--72 more days to get another 1000
miles plus 36 days for 500 miles: 3.6 months. So in total to get a one
way trip from PHX to NY you'll have to use MS Live Search for FIVE AND A
HALF MONTHS from signup. And that's for one person only.

Tell me how does that compare to your normal US credit card reward?

And if you think this is only for their live search, think again! This
promo will only work if you're using Internet Explorer (IE!) -so it's
purposely targeted to the NOT GEEK crowd-and not all of them. The promo
is limited to the first 1,000,000 respondents before December 31, 2008.
Plus it's valid only for legal residents in the 50 United States and
Washington, D.C., who are at least 13 years of age, have a valid Windows
Live ID, are accepted to participate in the program and participate in
the program until its completion on April 15, 2009

Yes, us Pinoys will not be able to participate. They want the good old
American heartland to continue using their Microsoft Internet Explorer
(if you have to, please least upgrade it to Version 7 or 8!) and use the
"new" live search. Geeks need not comment on this as this is not
targeted to you. Try it in firefox and you'll get:

"To earn value for your searches and join the SearchPerks! promotion you
must have Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher to participate. Copy this URL
and paste it into Internet Explorer:

Sign up for SearchPerks! and start earning tickets towards exciting
prizes whenever you search the Web - up to 25 tickets per day. It's
free, easy to use, and your tickets accumulate as fast as you can
search.

And because SearchPerks! is brought to you by Microsoft Live Search, you
can count on rich, comprehensive search results.

Be sure to sign up before the registration deadline on December 31,
2008-the sooner you sign up, the more opportunity you have to earn."

-end of quote-

It makes sense that Microsoft is leapfrogging the early adopter crowd
for SearchPerks because of this crowd is HOSTILE towards the company and
loves firefox. They're going instead to the heart of their userbase.

So if you're in the US and you like IE, you must act now because you
gotta sign up before the end of this year (a deadline and a call to
action with an exclusivity clause - nice marketing touches)

Today my duty was changed to help my friend. So I awoke early 7.00 am and start duty at 7.30 am. The first shift was only two hours and then I went to my room and sleep up to 12.15 pm. Then went to office and spend some time there. Then lunch and return back to room. And now , in front of my laptop and blog writing with the music Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend". I like this song very much.Yesterday only , I heard this song.I download this song and I want to post this song in my blog.

Yesterday night, I call to my friend, Sijo George. He is working here in QBN.He is a computer professional and gave me moral support. Yesterday I call him, he told me don't feel comfort in the current job. If I feel comfort, I didn't change this job and have no growth. Its a valuable instruction and also offer his help in anything.
